Sylvanite is one of our favorite black diamond runs on the front side of the mountain, but did you know it was also a highly efficient silver mine near Copper Creek, about 4 miles northwest of what is now the Judd Falls trailhead? The Sylvanite Mine operated in the area from approximately 1880 to 1910, and in that time, it produced over a million dollars’ worth of silver ore! The 25 to 30 men who worked there all lived together in a 16-by-36-foot frame house that would become almost completely buried in snow in the winter.
