No matter where you live, you deserve to feel safe there. This month, our Research Team investigated the mental health and experiences of LGBTQ+ young people in the rural United States. We found that those LGBTQ+ youth living in rural areas reported more negative lived experiences and overall mental health outcomes than those living in non-rural areas.
Our findings dig deeper to explore how trans and nonbinary young people are impacted by rurality. LGBTQ+ youth (trans and nonbinary youth in particular) in rural areas reported higher levels of bullying, threats, and victimization, fewer supportive spaces, and a higher likelihood of attempting suicide.
At The Trevor Project, our research aims to shed light on the needs and experiences of LGBTQ+ young people nationwide to better understand how we can show up as supportive adults and active allies. Your allyship to rural LGBTQ+ youth is lifesaving — our data proves it.
