Last February, our community was rocked by the loss of Nex Benedict (he/they), a 16-year-old student at Owasso High School. Nex was nonbinary, of Indigenous Choctaw ancestry, and loved animals. He was kind, passionate, and adored by his friends. Nex’s loss dimmed a light in our universe — and shed light on the humanity behind our research at The Trevor Project. While lives like Nex’s are so much more than statistics, their struggles painfully illustrate what our data tells us. Our 2023 research revealed that Indigenous LGBTQ+ young people have 66% higher odds of a past-year suicide attempt compared to their peers. Our 2024 research showed that nearly half of LGBTQ+ young people ages 13-17 experienced bullying in the past year, and those who did had significantly higher rates attempting suicide in the past year than those who were not bullied.
