LGBTQ+ young people deserve to feel safe where they live 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 For our January research brief, our team worked with the lgbtmap to analyze the relationship between state-level LGBTQ+ policy, well-being, and decisions to leave a state. We found that, often, LGBTQ+ young people and families decide to leave their home state due to LGBTQ-related policies or laws. 39% of those sampled reported considering moving to a different state as a result of anti-LGBTQ+ policies. The Movement Advancement Project tracks over 50 different LGBTQ+-related laws and policies that shape LGBTQ+ people’s lives, experiences, and equality. The laws are scored and summarized to determine an overall policy tally score for each state. Our research found that LGBTQ+ young people living in a state with a higher LGBTQ+ policy index reported lower odds of recent politics negatively impacting their well-being.
