Inclusion is a human right. This #HumanRightsDay, we affirm the inherent dignity, humanity, and belonging of every LGBTQI+ person around the world. The Trevor Project and Outright International know that our queer, trans, and intersex community, especially LGBTQI+ young people, face barriers to achieving their basic human rights. According to The Trevor Project’s 2023 U.S. National Survey, 60% of LGBTQI+ young people reported that they have felt discriminated against in the past year due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. According to Outright International, 68 countries and territories still criminalize LGBTQI+ people and only 36 out of 195 countries recognize same-sex marriage. We know that inclusion is a human right — and it’s lifesaving. Because when inclusion happens, trans youth report lower suicide risk.
