Microsoft announced that it will be shutting down Skype in May to fully focus on its homegrown service Teams.
Once the world’s most popular video-calling website, Skype has struggled to compete with more convenient and user-friendly services like FaceTime, Messenger, and WhatsApp over the last decade.
Despite a brief surge in popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic, Skype’s market share fell from 32.4% to just 6.6% between 2020 to 2021, while its younger rival Zoom skyrocketed to 48.7%.
