The LeVeque Tower was designed as a harbor for blimps and airships 🎈 …but that never happened. The building was meant to receive dirigible passengers to its top floor, but several airship accidents discouraged their use through the 1920s and 30s. In 1925, the Shenandoah crashed near Ava, Ohio, killing 14 people. The American airships Akron and Macon crashed as well, and in 1936, the Hindenburg infamously crashed and burned in Lakehurst, New Jersey. With faster aircraft increasing in use, the day of the airship was soon passing. When the tower was completed in 1927, standing 555.5 feet high, it was the fifth-tallest building in the world. It remained the tallest building in Columbus until the 1970s. The tower was designed in the Art Deco style by architect C. Howard Crane.
