Columbus’ first “skyscraper” was the Wyandotte Building 🏢 …Depending on who you ask. Technically, the nine-story Wheeler Building (1895) was completed first, but its non-steel frame fell short of the eleven-story Wyandotte that came next. The Wyandotte Building (1897) was designed by Daniel Burnham, the legendary architect who pioneered the skyscraper. He’d just finished overseeing the World’s Fair in 1893, and after Columbus, he’d go on to build the Flatiron Building in New York City, Union Station in Washington, D.C., and Merchants Exchange in San Francisco. For many years, it housed a building and loan company, then Ohio state offices, and then Huntington Bank, who purchased the building in 2014.
