The Columbus Soap Box Derby returns this week ➡️ The Soap Box Derby began in Dayton, Ohio. In 1933, a local newsman discovered a group of local boys racing homemade cars, and was so impressed that he copyrighted “Soap Box Derby” and took the idea to Chevrolet, who came on as a sponsor. Grandview Hill was the ultimate Soap Box Derby site through the 1940s and 50s in Columbus. Racers, like those pictured here, would careen down Grandview Ave. to the Riverside Dr. finish line. They were limited to a $10 budget and discouraged from construction assistance from adults. In this photo, racers line up at the Grandview Heights Municipal Building in 1953. This race was broadcast on WCOL radio, and winner Pete Beckwith went on to the national championship in Akron (where he was bested by a racer from Indiana). In 1967, a permanent racetrack was built at Big Run Park, where the local Championships will be held this Saturday, June 14. Find more info via soapboxderby_columbus 🚗 #soapboxderby ...
