General William T. Sherman was born just 40 minutes from Columbus ➡️ The Sherman House Museum in Lancaster, Ohio, preserves the birthplace of General Sherman and his brother, the famous politician John Sherman. The home was built in 1811, with additions in 1816 and 1870. Now, after nearly 214 years, it stands restored to look just as it did when the Shermans lived there. Inside, you’ll find many rooms with furniture from the General and Ellen Sherman’s collection, a parlor set from Ulysses S. and Julia Grant, family heirlooms, Civil War artifacts, and even a recreation of Sherman’s wartime field tent. William Sherman is best remembered for his Civil War campaigns, including the 1864 March to the Sea. After the war, he called for early reconciliation and became Commanding General of the Army.
