Colerain Elementary paved the way for inclusive and accessible schooling ➡️ The Elementary School opened in 1957 at 499 E. Weisheimer Rd. in Clintonville, designed by local architects Kellam & Foley (who also designed the Scioto Downs grandstand). In 1975, Colerain expanded and became the first Columbus school built specifically for students with disabilities, welcoming students from seven counties. It also made history as the first public school in the U.S. to receive an Eyetyper, a new device allowing students to communicate using only their eye movements. In the 1980s, the school continued breaking barriers, installing Columbus’ first wheelchair-friendly fitness course. Today, Colerain remains an award-winning preK-5 school, offering classes for general education students alongside specialized programs for students with orthopedic and health impairments.
