Behind the scenes: library archivists are faced with a difficult challenge to preserve history in Columbus. “While a portion of this collection was discarded due to irreparable water damage, our team consulted with conservators at various Ohio institutions to develop a plan to preserve any salvageable photographs. Unfortunately, prolonged water exposure resulted in significant mold growth, which we carefully treated with 70% alcohol wipes on all saved items. After wiping down each photograph displaying signs of mold growth, we placed them in archival folders, interfiling photographs with sheets of wax paper to prevent them from sticking to each other as they dry. In some cases, the process of drying out the photographs has taken multiple rounds of laying them out in sunlight on designated tables covered with butcher paper.
