In 1978, President Jimmy Carter visited Columbus to dedicate the Mt. Vernon Plaza. Carter spoke for eight minutes, then "started to move through the crowd... before realizing he hadn't officially dedicated the plaza. He returned to the podium to make it official" (via columbusdispatch).
Massive crowds attended the ceremony. Carter spoke about the importance of local government and community advocacy, comparing the success of the building to the success of his recent peace talks at Camp David.
The Mt. Vernon Plaza, which still stands at 1035 Atcheson St., was part of a $13 million urban renewal project in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood, just north of King-Lincoln and just northeast of downtown. The redevelopment plan called for a high-rise apartment for the elderly, and also included townhouses, commercial properties and a recreation center.
