A spotlight on the Automotive Building in the CNE grounds, which opened in August 1929. As the Exhibition grounds grew eastward at the end of the 20th century, culminating in the unveiling of the monumental Princes’ Gates in 1927, new grand structures were built to anchor the east end of site which showcased innovative technologies – this included the Electrical and Engineering Building on the north (now the site of the Enercare Centre), and the Automotive Building on the south. The Princes' Gates can be seen on the far right of this image. As the name indicates, the Automotive building was originally utilized as a showcase for new car models. Designed by Toronto architect Douglas Edwin Kertland, the building style embodies a transition from the Beaux Arts architectural style (reflected in earlier structures like the Music Building and Liberty Grand) to Art Deco (seen prominently in the Horse Palace and the Bandshell).
