Now Open: Salvatore Emblema at White Cube Hong Kong 🎉
Throughout his career, Salvatore Emblema (1929–2006) undertook a sustained and rigorous investigation into light, using transparency as a device to reformulate the boundaries of painting.
The artist harnessed the semi-transparent quality of sackcloth and jute canvas, using a method known as detessute – removing threads from the fabric – to allow the wall behind the work to permeate the composition of his paintings.
Across various material and spatial shifts in his work, the artist endeavoured to test the conditions under which painting might exist.
View Salvatore Emblema’s exhibition at White Cube Hong Kong until 5 July 2025.
