Jon Ott on Richard Hunt’s ‘Steel Garden’ (2013) Richard Hunt’s biographer and friend, Jon Ott discusses ‘Steel Garden’, a branching stainless-steel sculpture produced in the final decade of Hunt’s life and currently on view in the courtyard at White Cube Bermondsey. Originally commissioned for the entrance of the US Steel Corporation’s mill in Chicago, ‘Steel Garden’ acknowledges the significance of steel manufacturing for the millions of African Americans who migrated north during the Great Migration. For Hunt, industrial production embodied transformative potential not unlike that of nature – sustained through growth, resilience and adaptation.
