Antony Gormley’s ‘Natural Selection’ consists of 24 lead-encased objects – 12 natural and 12 human-made – arranged along the gallery floor, in descending order from the largest, a sphere, to the smallest, a pea-sized form.
Near the middle, the proximity of two near-identical shapes – a goose egg and a grenade – establishes an uncanny kinship.
Engaging in a critical enquiry that unfolds dialectics of creation and destruction, presence and absence, ‘Natural Selection’ becomes a site of convergence between human instruments and organic forms.
‘Natural Selection’ is on view in Antony Gormley’s exhibition ‘WITNESS: Early Lead Works’ at White Cube Mason’s Yard until 8 June 2025.
