As a former police captain, New York City Mayor Eric Adams railed against the injustices of gung-ho policing, but as the mayor, he has embraced a unit that perpetuates it. ProPublica interviewed more than a dozen former and current members of the New York Police Department, reviewed internal department records and watched video footage of several police encounters. We found that Adams has been backing an elite NYPD unit called the Community Response Team, which is led by his longtime allies and riddled with abuses.
