In this sneak peek of “Before a Breath,” our new feature documentary, stillbirth parent advocate Debbie Haine Vijayvergiya (stillbornstillmatters) campaigns for the SHINE for Autumn Act, a bill to fund stillbirth research, data collection and perinatal pathology training. The bill was named for her daughter Autumn Joy, born still in 2011. More than 20,000 pregnancies in the United States end in stillbirth each year. These losses are not inevitable. At least 1 in 4 U.S. stillbirths is likely preventable. Our documentary weaves together the stories of Debbie and two other mothers who have lost children to stillbirth and are now striving to make pregnancy safer. The film will be released in 2025. We hope it will be a catalyst for critical conversations.
