At least 10 gun industry businesses, including Glock, Smith & Wesson, Remington and Mossberg, secretly handed over customers’ names, addresses and other data to lobbyists, who used the details to rally firearm owners to elect pro-gun politicians.
The gun industry launched this project ahead of the 2000 election. Within three years, the database — filled with warranty card information and supplemented with names from voter rolls and hunting licenses — contained at least 5.5 million people.
Privacy laws shield the names of firearm purchasers from public view, but the data collected by gun-makers gave industry lobbyists a unique ability to identify and contact large numbers of gun owners and shooting sports enthusiasts.
