Porsha Ngumezi, a 35-year-old mother of two living in Houston, Texas, was 11 weeks pregnant when she died last year after doctors did not give her a D&C, or dilation and curettage procedure, to complete her miscarriage and stop her bleeding. According to more than a dozen doctors who reviewed a summary of her case for ProPublica, her death was preventable. Some said it raises serious questions about how abortion bans are pressuring doctors to avoid the standard of care – and reach for less-effective options that could expose their patients to more risks. This is the fifth case we’ve reported on – and the third case in Texas – in which women died after they did not receive a D&C, or its second-trimester equivalent, in time or at all. 📸: Danielle Villasana for ProPublica #abortion #abortionban #roevwade
