This ancient wax-based medium dates back over 2,000 years, with luminous examples like the Fayum mummy portraits still intact today. The name “encaustic” comes from the Greek enkaustikos, meaning “to burn in”—a nod to the heat-fusing process that gives these paintings their signature glow.
