Hugo Aguilar Ortiz makes Indigenous history in Mexico. ⚖️🇲🇽
On Monday, Mixtec lawyer and Indigenous rights advocate Hugo Aguilar Ortiz was sworn in as Mexico’s first Indigenous Chief Justice — and the first ever elected by popular vote.
It’s also a global first: an entire national judiciary chosen at the ballot box. But with voter turnout at just 13% and concerns over political influence, questions remain about the future of judicial independence.
How powerful is it to see an Indigenous lawyer lead Mexico’s highest court? Do you think this model of judicial reform could ever work in the U.S. or Canada?! 👀💭⤵️
