In early October,
@ellsworthafb’s 28th Bomb Wing collaborated with
@grandforksafb’s 319th Reconnaissance Wing to perform a hot pit refueling operation at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota - testing the adaptability of the base and its Airmen.
Having operated B-1’s in the past, the hot pit comes 30 years after the last of the B-1B Lancers left Grand Forks in 1994. Many of the features needed to house the bomber are still present such as runway length requirements, ability to store munitions, and refueling capabilities.
The aircraft will continue to support Ellsworth’s taskings out of Grand Forks AFB during the relocation, which is expected to last about 10 months. As the first base to receive the new, next generation bomber – the B-21 Raider – the temporary relocation allows Ellsworth to complete a runway construction project as part of the base’s preparations for its arrival.
