This United States Air Force AC-130U "Spooky" Gunship crew was recently recognized for their exemplary performance during a nine hour firefight that took place on April 3rd, 2019, near Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. The aircrew of Spooky 41 provided precision-strike support to Special Tactics operators, enabling the safe recovery of 15 patients and the clearance of an Islamic State of Iraq and Syria-Khorasan redoubt. The gunship fired upon the enemy, engaging combatants who were less than 140 meters from the group on the ground. Three medical-evacuation helicopters hovered for more than an hour to safely rescue 15 patients. The enemy was unable to get a single shot off at the MEDEVAC helicopters due to the precise airpower from Spooky 41’s aircrew.
