OTD in 1993, an MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter carrying U.S. Army Rangers was shot down by enemy rocket-propelled grenade fire in Mogadishu, Somalia. A team of United States Air Force pararescuemen were dispatched to secure the crash site and protect the Rangers. What resulted was a seventeen-hour firefight. Despite his own injuries, TSgt Timothy A. Wilkinson repeatedly ran through enemy fire to extract five wounded Rangers from the crash site. Wilkinson and his team worked furiously to treat the wounded, saving the lives of multiple gravely wounded American soldiers.
