You may ask, why the mustache?
It has been suggested Dalí’s mustache was a tribute to Spanish Golden Age painter Diego Velázquez. On one occasion, the artist stated, "It's the most serious part of my personality. It's a very simple Hungarian moustache. Mr. Marcel Proust used the same kind of pomade for this moustache."
Whether grown as a tribute to Velázquez, or as a mark of distinction and Spanish flair, the artist’s mustache has become a cultural emblem in its own right.
