Salvador Dalí painted this masterwork in the St. Regis Hotel in New York City in 1976. Shortly after, it was acquired, the work was lent to our Museum from 1985-86, where it quickly became a visitor favorite. Many did not realize at the time that it was not a part of our collection—yet. Decades later in 2004, The Dalí Museum acquired it and it now hangs permanently in our gallery. #TheDali #SalvadorDali #Masterworks #Throwback 🎨: Mike Guinther (a Museum employee since 1983-present) hangs "Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea which at Twenty Meters Becomes the Portrait of Abraham Lincoln-Homage to Rothko (Second Version)" in The Dalí Museum Gallery.
