Psychoanalysis was critical to Dalí’s work. As a student, he was submerged in the writings of Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud. Dalí referred to Freud’s “Interpretation of Dreams” as “one of the capital discoveries in [his] life.”
References to Freud’s psychology are present throughout Dalí’s work. By studying Freud, Dalí gained the confidence to champion the most taboo of subject matter, as demonstrated by his startling self-portrait, “The Great Masturbator.”
