During the WWL-TV Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Debate, candidates were asked about former President Donald Trump’s suggestion to deploy National Guard troops in New Orleans to help fight crime.
Michelle Woodfork said the idea should be part of a broader conversation about partnerships, while noting the Guard’s past support during Hurricane Katrina.
Edwin Shorty Jr. opposed the plan, arguing the Guard isn’t trained for policing and criticized Sheriff Susan Hutson’s handling of communication after the recent jailbreak.
Sheriff Susan Hutson pushed back, saying local deputies deserve better pay and resources instead of bringing in outside forces.
The question highlighted one of the central issues of the 2025 sheriff’s race: crime, safety, and confidence in local law enforcement.
