Did you know that less than 5% of the images in general medicine textbooks show conditions on skin of colour? Because many skin conditions look different in deeper complexions than they do in less melanated skin tones, they are not as easily recognized. That includes common skin conditions like eczema. It’s a sad, but a real fact is that baby eczema often goes misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed in skin of colour, and considering that babies of colour are nearly twice as likely to develop baby eczema than white children, things need to change. Learning to recognize eczema in your own child can go a long way toward improving their quality of life. Eczema most commonly appears in folds of skin, like behind the knees or around the neck, or on the forehead or cheeks. It may appear reddish in colour, but could also look dark brown, grey, or purple in deeper skin tones.
