Angela Rayner has resigned as UK housing secretary and deputy prime minister after failing to pay enough tax on her flat. She has also stepped down as deputy leader of the Labour Party, a position to which she was elected by party members. Rayner referred herself to the prime minister's ethics adviser earlier this week, after admitting underpaying stamp duty on her £800,000 home in Hove, East Sussex. She claimed she was badly advised when making the purchase, and said she "deeply" regretted the "error".
