Nautilus EV’s deep-sea exploration captured a remarkable sight: an acrobatic pelagic snail twisting through the water column. The biology team reacted with excitement as the snail’s movements resembled mid-water flips and turns rarely observed on camera. This snail is a pteropod, often called a “sea butterfly.” Unlike bottom-dwelling snails, pteropods propel themselves with wing-like flaps adapted from their foot. They play a crucial role in marine food webs and are highly sensitive to ocean acidification, making them important indicators of ocean health. Video from Nautilus EV
