September 28 is International Safe Abortion Day. Every year, thousands of people across the world lose their lives to unsafe abortions. Restrictive abortion bans, including those in the US, also have deadly consequences. Abortion is absolutely a life-saving procedure and must be accessible to all. We mourn and solemnly remember the tragic deaths of Amber Thurman and Candi Miller, whose lives were lost as a result of restrictive abortion laws in US states. These bans disproportionately harm Black women and exacerbate existing inequalities. These women should both still be here. All they needed was timely access to standard medical care without the threat of criminalization — instead, Georgia’s abortion ban did what all abortion bans do — delayed and denied necessary medical care, leading to the deaths of Amber and Candi. This is what we mean when we say abortion saves lives.
