Step inside the Watts Coffee House. Currently out of operation since 2019, the space is frozen in time. The coffee shop opened in the late ‘90s, but the Mafundi Building’s history goes back earlier than that. The shop was a cultural hub for the local Black creative community, and was a crucial space to the neighborhood after the Watts Uprising in 1965. The building was awarded a grant through @GettyMuseum and @SavingPlaces’s Conserving Black Modernism initiative, which aims to preserve modern cultural heritage significant to Black history. Dive deeper into the impact of this grant program on another site, Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia, on getty.edu at our link in bio. #TellTheFullStory
