What do you think this ancient ornament was used for?
Archaeologists uncovered small shell pieces like this one in burials at the Nubian city of Kerma. They date to about 2400-2050 BC, meaning that they were crafted over 4000 years ago. These small oval objects were carved from conch shells imported to Nubia from the Red Sea; they were often placed near the ears of the deceased.
Initially, excavators assumed they were earrings or amulets. Now, they have been identified as hair ornaments. The wearer would slide a section of hair through the small slit and gather it in the hole of the shell to hold it back.
The shell’s natural curvature resulted in a simple yet elegant form. The material is delicate and working with it required great skill and care.
Wearing jewelry crafted from imported material was an indicator of wealth. Factors like import distance, difficulty of manufacture, and the beauty of the material contributed to the value of this piece.
