Since the 1970s, Nan Goldin has photographed drag queens and genderqueer people in her community with openness and affection. Here she portrayed her close friend and artistic muse, Joey Gabriel, outside a fundraiser for those affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Gabriel strikes a defiant pose amid the crisis, wearing a flamboyant outfit that recalls the Baroque extravagance seen in the next image of “Bust of Maria Cerri Capranica.” In both portraits, details of adornment and dress project the gender expression and power of their subjects. These works are part of the ongoing installation series “In Dialogue,” which pairs contemporary photographs with European paintings and sculpture created before 1900. For this year’s Day With(out) Art, visual_aids will present BEING & BELONGING, a program of seven new videos centering on the emotional reality of living with HIV today.
