Qandahar, Afghanistan is at the intersection of ancient trade routes and was once surrounded by powerful Asian empires. Walls 30 feet high and 30 feet thick were used to protect the city and obscure it from view. That is until 1881, when a British military doctor began taking some of the earliest known photographs of Qandahar.
