How would you change an art exhibit if you could? The exhibition “Reinventing the Américas” explores the ways that art was used to construct and disseminate imaginary represnetations of the Americas. Part fact, part fiction, these works were based on observation and European fantasy which have lasting implications to this day. To counteract this narrative, Indigenous artist and activist Denilson Baniwa from the state of Amazonas in Brazil intervened serveral artworks through the exhibition, creating a mural and cabinet of curiosities specifically for the show, and showcased his own work on these complex topics. His art aims to unveil the layers of colonization using the shared language of art and visual culture to question the ongoing stereotypes about Indigenous people and communicate the complex impact of colonization.
