Recognize Miami Marine Stadium from an Elvis Presley movie? (Name the movie in the comments!) Designed by 27-year-old Cuban architect Hilario Candela, this stadium was used for powerboat races, concerts, and religious services in its heyday. It was constructed in 1963 and features what was then the longest span of cantilevered concrete on earth. This iconic stadium was a masterful example of the ideals of modern architecture. Since Hurricane Andrew struck in 1992 it has been closed to the public and the building has suffered damage, deterioration, and extensive graffiti. In 2014, Getty granted money to support high-tech research and planning to conserve the stadium.
