When was the last time a work of art made you look twice? Paul Mpagi Sepuya (pagmi) is a Los Angeles-based photographer who uses mirrors in his work to play with our visual perception. His photographs emerge from what he describes as “a collaborative process of friendship, flirtation, and image-making” in the queer space of his studio, where sexual and creative encounters intermingle. In his "mirror studies," Sepuya slices his photographic prints into suggestive compositions and tapes them to a mirror. At times, his own hands are visible holding the pieces in place. The final images are reflections, with the camera lens staring back at us. Intimate and sensual, Sepuya’s images encourage us to look carefully and linger on the graceful curves of bodies. For Sepuya, photography is entwined with sexuality and the desire to look. By choosing to reveal interlocking limbs only in slivers, he instills a desire to see more.
