Wife of Zeus and mother of many of the other Greek divinities, she was powerful, often interrupting Zeus’s plans. Identifying Hera in Greek and Roman art is not always easy. In one of the best-known myths, Hera competes with Aphrodite and Athena for a golden apple inscribed “for the most beautiful.” Many Greek vase paintings show the three goddesses gathering before the Trojan prince Paris, who chooses Aphrodite. Nothing distinguishes Hera clearly from her counterparts on this amphora. But in the second image, featuring a vessel made 200 years later, Hera is recognizable by her scepter and crown.
