“I photograph those who push themselves to any extreme, and people who cling to the freedom to be themselves.”—Peter Hujar Peter Hujar is mainly known for his portraits of artists, musicians, and gender-fluid performers who were part of the creative scene in and around New York City’s Greenwich Village during the 1970s and 1980s. The second image is a portrait of Ethyl Eichelberger. The photograph captures the bare face of the playwright and drag performer, whom Hujar often photographed. Hujar became interested in photography while enrolled in the School of Industrial Art (now the High School of Art and Design) in New York City and later mastered the technical aspects of darkroom printing while working as an assistant for a handful of commercial studios.
