Do you know this part of Los Angeles history? El Pueblo and Olvera Street have many layers of history. Deep underground is one of the oldest pieces of infrastructure in the city: a canal called Zanja Madre, or Mother Ditch. Zanja Madre was built by Los Angeles's first settlers—a group of Black, Indigenous, Spanish, and multiracial families—to bring water from the L.A. River to the new village that would become the city. When Getty worked with the City of L.A. to conserve "América Tropical," a mural by Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros that overlooks historic Olvera Street, they designed a mural canopy and platform to keep Zanja Madre intact.
