Artist Imogen Cunningham was born on this day in 1883. "Photography is…simply a profession, or perhaps to be more accurate, a craft or trade to which both sexes have equal rights," she said in 1913. Cunningham was a groundbreaking artist with a long career who constantly evolved her style and subject matter. She dedicated herself to equality for women and all marginalized people. She built a network of women artists around her and mentored younger ones, and made portraits of individuals from overlooked communities that demonstrated her care for the subjects. She also fought for civil rights, joining the San Francisco Freedom March in 1963. Just two months before her death at the age of 93, when an interviewer asked her to name her favorite photograph, she replied, "the one I’m going to take tomorrow." Learn more about her life and work at the #linkinbio and at the Getty Center exhibition "Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective" through June 12. . . . 🏷 #GettyMuseum #GettyCenter #Phot...
