Pastels make this piece pop, but it's the pup that grabs our attention.
Jean-Étienne Liotard preferred pastels over other mediums because they were easy to work with, had no odor, and were more forgiving than other materials. Here, he used pastel to capture the composed features of the seven-year-old Maria Frederike and her alert lapdog. Liotard created wonderful textures, like the child's satiny cloak and pampered pooch's glistening black fur.
What type of dog is it? Some believe it is a phalène—a floppy-eared papillon—but what do you think?
