Get to know artist Shirin Neshat. In 1990, when artist Shirin Neshat returned to Iran for the first time since emigrating to the United States 15 years earlier, so much had changed. Observing how the Islamic Revolution of 1979 had impacted women in her native country, she felt inspired to generate her first series of photographs, "Women of Allah." In this groundbreaking body of work, Neshat portrays chador-clad, gun-bearing women (including herself) as a way to explore how Islamic fundamentalism was shaping notions of femininity. She incorporates hand-inscribed texts by Persian feminist poets and authors on the few parts of the female body that are allowed to be revealed—primarily the face, hands, and feet—in the spirit of protest, disruption, and confrontation.
