Vessels in the shape of human heads had a long history in both Greek and Roman art. Head flasks made of glass were first produced in the Mediterranean region in the first century.
They were mold blown and probably functioned as pitchers. Deities and mythological beings were popular subjects; the head of a long‑haired youth, perhaps the god Apollo, forms the body of the cobalt‑blue glass vase in the first photo. Though forms, colors, and styles varied, they remained popular until the fourth and fifth century.
