Get to know the work of LaToya Ruby Frazier. Her work focuses on personal stories that illuminate the lived experience of Black Americans. This series of photographs, "Home Body," captures the anguish of moving on from the death of a loved one. It was made after the passing of her grandmother (and namesake), Ruby, while Frazier was helping pack away her belongings. In four mournful self-portraits, the artist wears family clothing, haunting the emptied rooms of her childhood. This grid of images evokes the struggle to find one’s place within a family and places it in the context of the stress of inequality on Black Americans and the deteriorating infrastructure of her Rust Belt hometown, Braddock, Pennsylvania.
