Today is Day of Remembrance. On this day in 1942, 80 years ago, Executive Order 9066 was signed and over 120,000 Japanese Americans were forced into concentration camps. Photojournalist Lucile Dandelet documented the experience of Japanese American families in Los Angeles packing and preparing for this forced relocation. Each tells the story of people forced to give up everything. Men, women, and children of all ages lost their personal freedom. They were not charged with any crime and were not able to appeal their incarceration. Most lost their homes and businesses. After WWII and the end of the American internment camps, Dandelet continued to use photography to champion equality and social justice issues, including housing rights and rights for California’s migrant workers. 🏷: #DayofRemembrance #ExecutiveOrder9066 #History #Photography #GettyMuseum #LucileDandelet
